Climate Justice and Energy Campaigner a Bruxelles con Friends of the Earth Europe

We are looking for an energetic and enthusiastic person to join the international FoEE team (12 month cover for maternity leave). The position is based in Brussels, full time, and runs ideally from May 2010 until April 2011.
This is a unique opportunity to work with our Climate Justice and Energy team to influence the EU to take up its responsibility in fighting climate change and bringing people’s voices to decision-makers.
Jointly with national Friends of the Earth groups in 18 countries we are running the “Big Ask” campaign demanding that Europe cuts its emissions by 40% in 2020 and 100% in 2050 without offsetting, and provides its fair share of finances for helping developing countries to tackle climate change. Friends of the Earth is also starting to build up work on energy efficiency in housing.
FoE Europe campaigns for sustainable and just societies and for the protection of the environment. It unites more than 31 national organisations with thousands of local groups, and is part of the world’s largest grassroots environmental network, Friends of the Earth International.
Purpose of role:
The campaigner will work with FoEE’s Climate Justice and Energy Programme team to influence the EU to take up its responsibility in fighting climate change, and bringing people’s voices to decision-makers.
Focus will be on advocacy work at the European and international level- supporting FoEE member groups to maximize our advocacy outcomes, helping to coordinate and manage FoEE’s climate campaign and coordinate FoEE’s work on energy efficiency.
Key tasks and responsibilities:
- Coordinate advocacy work in Brussels and with national campaigners on European climate and energy related issues, with a focus on FoEE’s climate justice demands (emission reduction targets, national climate laws, opposing false solutions, climate finance). Maintain an overview of the key policy issues and political processes, relevant research, critical events and policy developments
- Coordinate further distribution of the “40% study” on emission reduction targets for 2020, and appropriate integration in advocacy
- Coordinate capacity building on European climate and energy related issues for FoEE member groups to maximize advocacy outcomes within our Big Ask campaign. This will happen via email briefings and updates for groups and drafting of advocacy tools, as well as through capacity building at campaigner meetings
- Attend lobby meetings of FoEE, or together with our allies in Brussels, and build up good relationships with MEPs and Commission officials
- Support international advocacy work on EU related climate issues at the UN level, and attend relevant meetings
- Drafting media releases and statements. Press spokesperson on relevant issues
- Support energy efficiency campaigning in the FoEE network. Including organising a meeting on Energy Efficiency with member groups, and help developing a campaign strategy for a new energy efficiency campaign
- Help with the planning, organisation and delivery of internal and network events such as campaign strategy meetings
- Collaborate with other FoEE programmes e.g. with the Economic Justice team on issues relating to climate finance and business influence on climate policies
- Ensure that FoEE positions and joint statements with other allies are in line with the objectives and positions of Friends of the Earth International climate programme
- Manage allocated campaign budget in line with FoEE finance policy, seeking assistance of Finance Officer as required
- Support Coordinator in fundraising to possible funders which includes drafting evaluation, reporting, and application documents
Essential requirements:
- University degree or able to demonstrate equivalent level of analytical and research skills
- At least two years of environmental campaigning experience preferably at EU and at least at national level
- Proven record of project management including planning, implementation, budget handling and evaluation
- Knowledgeable about European and international climate policies and climate justice
- Experience with lobby work at European and national level
- Able to analyse and précis complex policy issues and documents for a wide range of audiences, including non-technical, and able to present complex policy issues so they are understandable by a wide variety of audiences
- A very good command of English, which is the working language
- Able to work in a team and independently, self motivated, ability to work to deadlines and prioritise workloads.
- Significant experience of facilitating successful internal and external meetings
- Experience of drafting and managing work plans for complex campaign issues
- Subject to our travel policy, able to travel throughout Europe, and occasionally beyond, for several days at a time
- Computer knowledge (Linux or Microsoft software e.g. word, excel, powerpoint)
- Commitment to the values, vision and mission of Friends of the Earth
- Able to work occasional evenings and weekends in keeping with the demands and cycles of the campaign
Desirable:
- Ability to speak one or more of the other EU languages
- An established reputation and network of contacts within the relevant institutions
- Sense of humour and creativity
- Experience and knowledge of the Friends of the Earth Network and climate campaign
This is a full time position based in FoEE office in Brussels. We can offer salary range of 2400 to 2800 gross depending on experience and seniority plus benefits (13th month salary, holiday allowance, luncheon vouchers, pension scheme, hospitalisation insurance).
The position will ideally start 1 May 2010. FoEE offers a highly motivating working environment in an international NGO.
