The Institute for Environmental Security is recruiting an intern to work as an assistant to the communication officer and on the organisation of an international conference. The intern will work from our Brussels office located near Place Stephanie for a period of 3 to 6 months.
The IES is an international non-profit non-governmental organisation established in 2002 in The Hague, in order to increase political attention to environmental security. Its multidisciplinary approach integrates the fields of science, diplomacy, law, finance and education. Activities are designed to provide policy-makers with a methodology to tackle environmental security risks in time, in order to safeguard essential conditions for peace and sustainable development. Duties and responsibilities
- Updating website content and assisting in daily management
- Drafting news for the website
- Creating and sending out of IES Newsletter
- Creating and maintaining contact and press lists
- Providing administrative and editorial support to staff in all activities leading to a publication, in all stages of the publishing process including assisting in communication with authors and external contractors (graphic designers, printing, mailing and publishing companies)
- Assisting with any other activities and research related to publications and information as need arises
- Events
- Assisting in the organisation of an international conference ʻClimate Change and International Security at Copenhagen IIʼ on 7-8 October in Brussels, including:
- Contact with conference participants and speakers
- Selection of conference venue and on-site inspection
- Negotiation with hotel and reservations
- Organisation of catering
- Organisation of transportation
- Assist in drafting the budget
- Audio/Video recording/Post conference production
Requirements
- Proven experience in the field of communication and/or event organisation
- University degree or equivalent professional qualification or experience
- Bilingual with fluent written and verbal English or English mother tongue, other European languages are a plus
- Research skills, including internet research
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and experience with web editing (html)
- Ability to proofread
- Interest in and preferably experience with NGO work, especially in the fields of environment, development and peace
- Familiar with negotiating rates and booking hotels, restaurants and other catering services
Personal skills and attitude
- Good interpersonal skills and willingness to work in an international environment
- Quick learner
- Conscientious, great attention to detail
- Person of trust, open-minded and a “problem solving” attitude
- Pro-active, dynamic and enthusiastic
- Highly organised, ability to multi-task and efficiency in prioritising
